Carawatha Park in Willagee is a popular community hub and meeting spot for local residents.
People of all ages, abilities and cultures enjoy the inclusive, accessible landscaped grounds and facilities since it opened in February this year.
City of Melville Mayor Russell Aubrey said Carawatha Park had provided the community with a shared space that has helped to strengthen the neighbourhood.
“It’s great to see the community take pride in their new park. The City is grateful for local residents’ efforts to preserve the area by weeding and taking measures to protect plants while they establish, so that all users can enjoy the natural oasis and ensure the area thrives.”
Local resident and Perth gardening celebrity, Sabrina Hahn is a frequent visitor to the park with her granddaughter. She says the park is a place where people meet, play, chat and relax, and this new community space is helping the locals get to know each other in a relaxed and inviting environment.
“It’s great to see the park being used to full capacity with families, teenagers and seniors all making use of it. There’s something for everyone and people are really getting to know who lives in their neighbourhood – the park has created a true sense of community belonging.
“Locals have seen the park evolve from a school to a disused vacant block and then from design concepts to reality. And now it’s ‘their park’. Some minor damage has occurred but overwhelmingly the space has been well loved and cared for by all who use it.”
Mayor Aubrey said it was disappointing recent incidents of vandalism had occurred to the hammock swing and some of the winter bush plantings and requested the community report any anti-social behavior and damage to help create a safer Melville.
