Infrastructure Levy in action

More than $600,000 worth of renewal works to buildings at six Willoughby City Council sportsgrounds commenced in January 2016. Council has committed to bring, and maintain, assets and infrastructure up to standards expected by the local community.

The works will be funded by Council’s Infrastructure Levy, introduced in 2015 to ensure Willoughby’s $760million worth of community assets are maintained in quality condition for the future, as well as combatting an average annual asset renewal backlog of $5.4million.

In its first year, the Infrastructure Levy will fund more than $1.2million worth of building works.

The works at the sportsgrounds will not only improve facilities and reduce ongoing maintenance requirements, but also reduce energy and water consumption at each site.

Willoughby Mayor, Gail Giles-Gidney said, “The upgrades to these buildings at our local sportsfields are a perfect example of the Infrastructure Levy funding in action, and the very reason why Council introduced the levy in the first place. Many of these buildings are 30 or more years old and in need of renewal.

Mayor Giles-Gidney added that the community had told council they expected their facilities, parks, playgrounds, bushlands and other assets to be maintained to a certain standard and Council has shown it is listening and meeting community needs.

The sportsground works have been scheduled across the various locations from January, with all upgrades to be completed by June 2016.
