First class facelift

City of Darwin made a big splash as it announced Liquid Blu, as the successful design team to work with Council on the Parap Pool redevelopment.

The Australian Government awarded a $4.5million National Stronger Regions Fund grant to Council in 2015, which is being matched by Council. The $9million budget will enable a Fédération Internationale de Natation (FINA)-compliant pool and heated training pool to be built.

Lord Mayor Katrina Fong Lim is thrilled about the announcement and looks forward to seeing a facility for the whole community.
“The new Parap Pool will continue to be a place for recreational and leisure use. This facility will cater for everyone and swimmers of all abilities.

“The Parap Pool Redevelopment will also put Darwin on the national map for swimming competitions, training and events, with our very first FINA-compliant pool.

“A new FINA-compliant facility will feature competition and training pools, a moveable bulkhead, marshalling areas and spectator seating. It will be able to host regional and national level competitions.”

The Federal Member for Solomon, Natasha Griggs MP said the challenges associated with developing northern Australia include the distances involved and the need for infrastructure.

“First class social infrastructure, such as a modern community facility and a FINA-compliant pool is required to recruit and retain skilled people in Darwin and Palmerston and the greater top end.

“The broader Darwin region is critical to our economic strength and our national identity and I am committed to working with Minister Josh Frydenberg and Lord Mayor Katrina Fong Lim in creating opportunities in the Territory.”

The redevelopment is expected to be completed by mid-2017 and will require the removal and replacement of all existing aquatic infrastructure.
