East meets West

The City of Mount Gambier has commenced works to transform a current rail corridor into a shared cycling/walking path that will join East and West Mount Gambier.

The rail trail project will provide a shared cycling/walking path along the derelict section of rail corridor that runs west to east approximately 3.1kms across Mount Gambier – from White Avenue to Pick Avenue – and links with the recently developed Railway Lands.

“The project is necessary because it will significantly help in encouraging Mount Gambier’s residents to cycle and walk more” said Presiding Member of Council’s Operational Services Committee, Councillor Desmond Mutton.

The three-metre-wide track will be constructed of asphalt on the existing track alignment and is expected to take approximately three months. No changes will be made at road crossings other than advisory signs that will be erected on the approach to roads.

Cr Mutton further explained, “a separate path will enable people to ride safely, completely separate from motor traffic, across almost the whole length of the city as many people have indicated that they want to cycle more but do not feel safe riding on the roads, particularly main roads which can get quite busy.”

Future work subject to funding may involve installing solar lighting along the path.

Council are excited to be developing this trail, which will complement the existing bike lanes throughout the City, and forms part of Council’s bike plan strategy.
