Recognising healthy communities
The Heart Foundation Local Government Awards recognise and showcase councils that are working to improve heart health by building a sense of community, encouraging people to be physically active, being smoke-free and making healthy food choices.
In 2016, the councils awarded nationally for best practice were:
Councils with populations 5,000 – 25,000
National Winner – Mid Murray Council, South Australia
National Highly Commended – Kiama Municipal Council, New South Wales
Councils with populations greater than 25,000
National Winner – City of Sydney, New South Wales
National Highly Commended – City of Greater Dandenong, Victoria
All national, and state and territory winning and highly commended councils are showcased in the 2016 winners’ booklet which highlights the innovative and sustainable ways that councils are creating healthier communities. You can view the booklet online at heartfoundation.org.au/lga.

Exciting prize packages include cash awards, commemorative frames and profiling of your council’s efforts through promotional material, presentation events and local media.
