Kicking goals for young people

The Shire of Broome in Western Australia has secured funding to continue a sports program for disadvantaged kids.

Council has secured $20,000 from the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries to continue the KidSport program until December 2017 to help young people participate in organised sport.

KidSport ensures children aged 5-18 can participate in structured sport and recreation programs no matter their financial situation by contributing up to $200 towards membership fees.

Since 2013 the Shire of Broome has processed 1554 applications and provided $149,725 worth of sporting club membership fees, with 711 children registering with a sporting club for the first time.

Acting Broome Shire President, Harold Tracey, said the KidSport program was a contributing factor to the continued growth of junior sport in Broome and surrounding communities such as One Arm Point.

“Our local community organisations, and most importantly our local sporting club volunteers have been tremendously supportive of KidSport,” Councillor Tracey said.

“It’s been a great team effort over the years to ensure our children have every opportunity to belong to one of our local clubs.”

The KidSport program is funded by the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries and administered by local governments throughout Western Australia.
