A Sunshine Coast community group that offers low-cost creative activities as a means of therapy and social interaction has received a major upgrade to its premises.
The upgrade to the Coolum HeARTs shed, funded and managed by Sunshine Coast Council, included a replacement of roof, access improvements, air-conditioning, electrical works and a new undercover shelter.
Coolum HeARTs welcomed Division 9 Councillor Steve Robinson to tour the improved premises while members worked on their art projects.
Cr Robinson, who allocated divisional funding towards the upgrade, said he was passionate about the group’s work.
“The TLC that council has provided this facility has made it more user friendly for the people who benefit so greatly from Coolum HeARTs’ workshops,” Cr Robinson said.
“This amazing organisation does wonderful work for the less fortunate people in our community and I’m so proud we’re able to help them do that by providing better premises.”
Coolum HeARTS was started by artist Clive Holden and wife Barb to help people who have significant challenges in their daily lives.
It offers access to painting, singing, drumming and writing, as well as tai chi and meditation.
“We have creative and therapeutic activities which they may not normally be able to enjoy,” Mr Holden said.
“Thanks to council and Cr Robinson, the people who come here, who often find it difficult to get out of the house, now have a fantastic, hospitable space.
“A year ago, we had just an old shed which had been used as a gym with nothing inside. Now we have so much more. It’s a complete transformation.”
Cr Robinson commended the group for its contribution to the Coolum community.
“Clive and Barb Holden have a lot to be proud of – they offer love and support to people who need it most,” Cr Robinson said.
