In Western Australia, City of Gosnells staff members are pedalling their way to a more efficient future, with the addition of eBikes to the City’s fleet.
The eBikes are part of a series of initiatives designed to lead the way in adopting and promoting sustainability measures.
The eBikes promoted more discussions about active transport among staff and community members, and encouraged staff members who didn’t usually participate in active transport to try something new.
The bikes provide additional motor assistance as cyclists pedal, taking the sweat out of cycling to make it easier and more convenient in a work fleet setting.
“These bikes have proven very popular among our staff members who tried them, especially for shorter trips between our City facilities and other meeting locations,” said Mayor Glenn Dewhurst.
“The City of Gosnells is determined to lead by example in terms of sustainability, and we are constantly searching for ways to reduce our carbon footprint and that of our community.”
The introduction of eBikes to the City began as part of a trial conducted by the Royal Automobile Club (RAC) in conjunction with the Switch Your Thinking initiative, a green living project led by the City of Gosnells and two other local governments, and supported by more than 10 other metropolitan local governments.
Through Switch Your Thinking, the City of Gosnells actively promotes resource efficiency and environmental awareness to encourage behaviour change.
Other Switch Your Thinking projects include the Young Reinventor of the Year competition, promotion of responsible cafés, waste reduction education, rewards and incentives for residents and businesses, and more.
The City continues to investigate sustainable options in all areas of business, said Mayor Dewhurst: “Our Mills Park Centre was the first public building in Australia to be awarded a 6 Star Green Star rating when it was completed in 2016, of which we are extremely proud.”
