Working in the local government sector requires specialist knowledge that needs continuing professional development.
Professional development not only provides the opportunity to update and upgrade your skills, it also ensures you remain competent in your profession throughout your career. The constantly evolving operating environment and challenges in different organisations mean there is a multitude of training requirements across the sector.
The research and training work undertaken at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) Institute for Public Policy & Governance and Centre for Local Government builds staff capacity to manage the complexity of local government work and develop ways to meet the needs of local communities. The Institute’s research is free to use, has national relevance and often includes case studies or toolkits that can be adapted within councils to support staff in their roles.
In addition to specialist postgraduate qualifications, the Institute and Centre offer professional development training through short courses for local government specialists in areas ranging from Environmental Health and Swimming Pool Assessment to Leadership and Strategic Planning.
An upcoming two-day Local Infrastructure Funding course will explore how actively managing sources of funding strengthen financial and asset management for improved service delivery across local government. Participants have the opportunity to learn from a range of expert presenters including a representative from Lindsay Taylor Lawyers.
The UTS Institute for Public Policy & Governance and the Centre for Local Government are the nation’s premier university-based teaching, research and consultancy centre dedicated to the advancement and sustainability of local government.
