Seniors switch on with digital classes

City of Darwin Libraries have launched a digital literacy program for seniors.

The 10-week Be Connected program teaches seniors how to use a digital device, be safe online, send emails, use social media, shop online and connect with family.

Leading the way in the first session were the Karama Library Knit ‘n’ Knatter social group who traded their knitting needles for iPads during the hour long group session. Trained City of Darwin library staff guided the crafty cross-stitchers in their personalised digital literacy session.

Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis welcomed the $6000 Department of Social Services activation grant and online resources empowering Darwin seniors to get web savvy.

“These classes will open the world to seniors. Every few days, by the press of a button I can talk to my mother who is 85 years old and knows how to use Facebook. We talk by video face-to-face.”
City of Darwin Alderman Justine Glover was delighted to launch the program.

“Older Australians with low internet skills can often feel isolated from their community and families at a time in their lives when feeling connected is so important.

“The classes are free and open to anyone in the community with an NT Seniors Card. There’s never been a better time for seniors to get online.”

Be Connected is an Australia wide initiative empowering all Australians to thrive in a digital world. For more information, visitbeconnected.esafety.gov.au.
