Gillies Bridge a treasure

Cessnock City Council will shortly be undertaking works to refurbish Gillies Bridge, Lovedale, to increase the life-span of the unique bridge and improve the safety of road users.

Works undertaken on the bridge will include the replacement of the timber deck, stringers, top chords, timber vertical struts and rails.
The structure of Gillies Bridge is an extremely unique heritage item, as it is one of only eight remaining de Burgh truss bridges in Australia. The bridge design, by Ernest de Burgh who joined the New South Wales Public Works Department in 1895 introduced the new design in 1899.
