Council facilities go OK Organic

The Pavilion Kiama (conference, wedding and event venue) has made the organic change, becoming the first Kiama Municipal Council-owned commercial operation to implement a food waste collection and there are more of the New South Wales Council’s facilities set to follow.

Waste Management Officer, Josephine St John, said in 2016, Council rolled out a new waste collection service to households within the urban area which included the collection of food waste.

Results show 75 percent of all waste collected is now recycled.
“With the success of the new waste service, Organics Kiama, Council decided it will now introduce the collection of food waste from various Council facilities.”

Pre and post audits conducted at The Pavilion have demonstrated a positive change in behaviour with the post audit identifying a resource recovery rate of 95.72 percent. This highlights a 25.85 percent increase from the pre-audit statistics.

Council’s Events and Marketing Co-ordinator, The Pavilion, Jackie Hall, said “We are so pleased that our customers have embraced the change in the way we manage our waste at our facility.

“In collaboration with our contract caterer, Culinaris, we have managed to achieve this outstanding result and look forward to implementing changes to improve our overall sustainability footprint.”

Continuing on with the project, a pre audit has been undertaken at Council’s Administration Centre and new waste infrastructure has been implemented into the building.

In the coming months, a post audit will be completed to determine the impact of the new waste system at a corporate level.

Council aims to implement this waste infrastructure upgrade across all of its commercial spaces and lead the way in waste management, waste minimisation and waste education.
