Wollongong City Council has approved a plan to restore the Belmore Basin foreshore embankment back to its original state.
The Belmore Basin foreshore area was hit by uncharacteristic sea swells caused by an east coast low-pressure system off the coast of the Illawarra in June 2016. These high seas damaged the existing rock wall and surrounding garden beds.
As part of the planned works, the garden bed will be re-established, and the rocks contained within the wire ‘cages’ will be restored to their correct positions.
In order to further protect the shoreline in future east coast storms Council will install a new low height concrete garden wall to protect the beds above.
Lord Mayor, Gordon Bradbery AM, said, “I fully appreciate the fact we will have to close this popular beach, it might be frustrating to some beachgoers but it’s important for public safety.
“Some heavy machinery will be in the area to carry out these important works and we need to make it a safe space for everyone.
It’s also why we’re proposing to complete the project during the quieter winter months for minimal disruption.
“We hope this new garden wall will protect the area during future high sea swell conditions.”
