Community’s voice is the key

The City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder, Western Australia, released the Kal City Centre Place Plan to the community for consultation last month.

The Plan considers the city centre’s current performance and future potential with a focus on investment, experience and image.

Twelve hundred community members helped contribute ideas during an extensive consultation process.

The Market Arcade played host to the launch of the Place Plan proposition, presenting an experience that enabled participants to visualise the City Centre’s possibilities.

Stalls of mulled wine and warm apple cider, chargrilled corn and soup along with the sale of fresh produce were available to reinvigorate the market space to its original use and created an experience for attendees to make comment.

Social media has played a big part in developing awareness of the plans, with a dedicated Facebook and Instagram page to promote the hashtag #kalcitycentre. It has encouraged the online community to get involved and visit the projects website where an interactive map can be accessed and comments made.

Encouraging all members of the community to have their say on changes that improve the central business district has both an in person and online space, and since 1 August the project has had a reach of over 17,000 people.

The City is actively promoting engagement via the interactive online platform and by social experience.

The City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder look forward to seeing these plans being developed into a design concept and delivering a rejuvenated city centre.
