Gawler City Council is excited to announce that the Visitor Information Centre is now selling “Gawler on the Go” reusable hot beverage cups.
Australians love their coffee and tea however, the ever-growing caffeine habit is leading to a major pollution hazard.
Coffee cups are estimated to be the second-largest contributor to litter waste after plastic bottles.
It is estimated Australians use 1 billion disposable coffee cups each year.
Richard Fine, who founded biodegradable coffee cup manufacturer Biopak a decade ago, estimated up to 90 percent of all disposable cups ended up in landfill, equating to around 60,000 kg of plastic waste per annum.
Mayor, Karen Redman, said, “It’s great to see the Gawler Visitor Information Centre partnering with cafés in Gawler to promote discounted hot beverages when you use your Gawler on the Go cup.
“What better way to support environmentally sustainable products than on a local level and within the wider community?
“With a number of critical environmental issues becoming increasingly evident globally, taking action on a local level is key in sustaining current and future generations.
“The Gawler on the Go cup is a small start to reducing the amount of waste that goes to landfill”, said Mayor Redman.
