The City of Gosnells has received an outstanding social procurement award from Western Australian Disability Enterprises, recognising the City’s efforts to contract disability organisations for parks operations and tree services.
The award follows a decision last month to update the City’s purchasing policy, to recognise the social value of engaging with disability enterprises when contracting services for the community.
Mayor, Glenn Dewhurst, said the City’s new approach had led to contracting several disability enterprises, such as Activ Foundation, Intelife and Workpower.
“Value for our community can’t be measured in dollars alone.
“When we contract disability enterprises, both the City’s employees and the disability enterprises’ employees learn from and cooperate with each other.
“It also gives people with disability regular work and a sense of achievement, while providing the enterprises with regular income that allows them to continue their social work.
“It’s proving to be particularly beneficial to our community and as a result, we will be exploring additional ways we can work together on an ongoing basis.”
Work currently undertaken in the City by disability enterprise employees includes verge mowing, weed spraying, barbecue cleaning and tree planting.
