School based traineeships on offer

Supporting local youth employment and recruiting young workers onto the Works team with School Based Traineeships.

West Tamar Council, Tasmania, is pleased to be able to offer two School Based Traineeships from 2019 to acquire a Certificate II in Civil Construction.

Initially open to Exeter High School Year 10 students, the traineeship is the equivalent to three years of study, with the option to pick up extra hours during school holidays to fast track the Certificate.

The School Based Traineeship involves two days a week working as a regular paid employee of the West Tamar Council, and the other three days of normal school work.

TasTafe will oversee the certificate along with the Education Department, and MEG Australia Limited, with the students also mentored by Council’s existing Works Department staff and Road Maintenance Supervisor.

Additionally, Council will also assist students to obtain any licences required for the position (if they’re of a suitable age).

An information session will be held with parents in late February to discuss the program and instigate expressions of interest. A week of work experience will then follow to ensure students are aware of what the job entails, before a full application process is undertaken, including interviews.

Two students will be accepted into the School Based Traineeship program for 2019.

It is imperative to receiving the Certificate II in Civil Construction that the students continue with their studies and complete Year 12 or equivalent, alongside their work with Council.
