Fraser Coast Regional Council, Queensland, is relining almost 20km of sewers this financial year as part of a $5.17 million project to maintain and improve the region’s wastewater network.
Councillor Anne Maddern said the sewers being lined have had breaks, cracks and leaks identified through inspections using remotely operated cameras.
“The Fraser Coast Regional Council is focussed on ensuring we have resilient regional infrastructure that supports the current and future needs of the community.
“Work recently commenced on relining 7.5 kilometres of small diameter sewers in Hervey Bay, with work starting soon on a further 2.8 kilometres of large diameter sewers in Maryborough and Hervey Bay.
“Relining allows Council to repair the sewers quickly and at a fraction of the cost of digging them up and replacing them.
“The majority of the relining work in Hervey Bay is being done in areas near the beach to reduce the amount of salt water entering the pipes through cracks and leaking joints.
“This is particularly important as the salt water affects the ability for treated effluent to be used for the irrigation of cane fields, turf farms and hardwood plantations.
The new liners are inserted through existing manholes which cuts the need to excavate pipes or disrupt sewerage services in most cases.
Cr Maddern said a portion of this year’s relining work had been funded with support from the State Government’s Works for Queensland program, and more relining would occur next year as part of Council’s regular maintenance program.
