Recycle Street

Recycle Street with moveable modular shop-fronts can be adapted to suit different locations.

With the growing population and increasing demand on waste and recycling centres, City of Gold Coast has invested in a recycling initiative designed to make recycling easier.

Located at Helensvale Waste and Recycling Centre, the aptly named Recycle Street is an accessible shop-front style of self-service recycling, conveniently colour coded and categorised for each type of recyclable material including cardboard, mixed recycling, car batteries, and hazardous chemicals.

The shop-fronts are fully moveable and modular meaning that this concept can be readily adapted and modified to other locations, and as circumstances change at existing locations.

To extend the lifespan of Gold Coast’s existing landfill, proactively encouraging good recycling behaviours of Gold Coasters is crucial. Recycling and recovery are two of the easiest alternatives to landfill disposal. Throughout the Gold Coast the community currently loses 60 percent of recyclable materials to landfill.

Since the implementation of the Helensvale Recycle Street in June 2018, resource recovery at Recycle Street has improved by nine percent.

Following the success of the first Recycle Street, this innovative solution to recycling will be introduced to three additional Waste and Recycling Centres across the Gold Coast within the next year.
