The Waterfront project transforming a coastal community

District Council of Grant, South Australia, is transforming the Port MacDonnell foreshore in a two stage redevelopment dubbed – The Waterfront project.

By improving facilities and recreational spaces, linking the foreshore to other parts of the township and integrating with existing infrastructure, the project aims to increase tourism to the area as well as provide a variety of open spaces for the local community.

A bespoke bronze lobster fisherman statue, commissioned by Sydney artists Gillie and Marc, is a highlight of the development, showcasing the maritime heritage of Port MacDonnell.

Stage 1 also includes a feature boardwalk, information shelter, new car parking, picnic lawns, street furniture and a jetty plaza designed for hosting community events and activities.

Another key feature of the project has been the repurposing of the original jetty timber retained by Council after the jetty was upgraded in 2015.

The timber was cleaned and prepared for use to build the feature boardwalk and street furniture in and around the area and is a beautiful addition to the project and a nod to the township’s history.

Council is working towards the delivery of Stage 2 which will include a unique playground that serves as a regional attraction.

Stage 1 was budgeted at $1.17million and was co-funded between the District Council of Grant and the Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure Places for People grant funding program.
