Somerset Regional Council was one of only 13 councils across the state to score top marks for financial sustainability and management following the release of the 2017/18 local government audits by the Queensland Audit Office (QAO).
The QAO’s May report to Parliament showed Somerset scored green lights across all assessed categories of control environment, monitoring activities, risk assessment, control activities, information and communication, year-end processes, timeliness, quality and financial sustainability.
Somerset Mayor, Graeme Lehmann, said the report reflected Council’s practical approach to financial management and service provision.
“Throughout Somerset Regional Council’s 11 years, Council has operated within its means and within ratepayers’ means.
“We have 1,489 kilometres of constructed local roads in Somerset on a small rate base, and it is vital that we manage what we have effectively for the long term sustainability and prosperity of our region.
“We are open and transparent with our financial information while taking practical steps to safeguard public funds from waste and misuse.”
The Mayor said this successful approach continued as part of Somerset’s $48.2 million 2019/20 budget.
“As a council we are maintaining a clear focus on supporting and enhancing our rural lifestyle by investing in infrastructure while maintaining affordable rates.
“We are building communities, investing wisely and staying true to a long term vision for the Somerset region.”
