Design with nature: Reconnecting people and place*

With the relentless growth of our cities, population and climate challenges, there has never been a more pressing need to promote new techniques and designs for greening our cities, communities and dwellings.

The Australian Landscape Conference, at the Melbourne Convention Centre, 23-27 March 2018, is the ideal venue to review world practices. This biennial event is a mainstay of the landscape design and gardening calendar, with speakers who never fail to inform and inspire with two days of presentations based on their innovative design practices around the world.

Speakers at the 2018 Conference include Kathryn Gustafson (USA), the grande dame of landscape architecture, who will provide her first presentation at an Australian conference. Professor Cassian Schmidt (Germany), Dr Noel Kingsbury (UK) and Bettina Jaugstetter (Germany) complement their lectures with practical workshops to provide unique learning opportunities for how their perennial-style natural planting schemes can translate to Australian conditions.
Australian expatriate Bernard Trainor (now in California) and talented Spanish designer Miguel Urquijo will present their superb landscape designs from highly relevant, challenging climates. Chelsea Flower Show winner Andy Sturgeon (UK) will share his timeless approach to design in both commercial and residential settings. Outstanding local designers, Kate Cullity and Sam Cox will inspire us with their outstanding work.

With practical workshops covering planting design, green roofs, tropical style planting schemes, new native cultivars (selection and maintenance), collaborative design and community consultation, the Conference is an ideal opportunity for local councils to acquaint themselves with new concepts and trends.
