Apprentice program fills skills gap for council

Council’s apprentices, Colby and Brad.

With several major developments and upgrades underway, Northern Midlands Council, Tasmania, is supporting two apprentices in its Works Department. 

In early 2018, Northern Midlands Council recognised the need and demand for skilled employees, after a shortage of trained and capable workers available to Council was identified.

During this time, Council investigated the possibility of employing and training its own apprentices and trainees.

With an increased workload, and a variety of major redevelopments and larger projects planned to commence in the coming years, it was acknowledged that appointing apprentices would be beneficial to all parties involved.

Council now has two Works Department employees currently completing their apprenticeships.

Brad, who is undertaking a Carpentry Apprenticeship, and Colby, who is undertaking a Horticulture Apprenticeship. Both employees commenced their apprenticeship and full-time work with Council in September 2018.

Over the last few years, Council has been successful in receiving several large State and Federal grants and funding to go towards redeveloping several major facilities and amenities within the municipality.

These include redeveloping the Longford Recreation Ground, a completely new facility at the Campbell Town War Memorial Oval, upgrades to several recreation grounds and further upgrades and extensions to several existing amenities including Morven Park in Evandale.

These grants and funding have provided many years’ worth of valuable work to the Works Department, which has allowed Council to consider providing more apprenticeships and traineeships.

Council recognises the importance of providing ongoing training to its employees and values continued career development and the benefits of retaining skilled workers in the workforce.
