More than 2,200 skateboarders, scooter and BMX riders took part in a series of free clinics and competitions in the City of Gosnells, Western Australia, as part of an initiative designed to engage and encourage positive participation amongst young people.
The Roll on Skate Park Series 2018/19 involved 16 skate and scooter clinics and 11 competitions taking place across the City’s four skate parks.
All events were attended by the City’s Youth Services team, and some were held in conjunction with other companies and agencies.
Mayor, Glenn Dewhurst, said the annual series was a terrific way to encourage young people to be more active outdoors, while encouraging families to make the most of the City’s beautiful parks and skate facilities.
“Not only do our young people have the opportunity to improve their skate, scooter or BMX skills, they can also have fun in a positive and safe environment doing something they enjoy.
“The Roll on Skate Park Series has been great at bringing our community together, with parents and siblings coming along to cheer the participants on, and getting to know our youth workers and other families.”
In addition to the Skate Park Series, the City’s Youth Services team hosted more than 230 Skate Jams attended by 7,811 young people.
Around 730 skate and scooter riders took part in an annual competition ‘King of the Hill’ hosted by the City in partnership with three other south-east Perth local governments, the Cities of Belmont, Armadale and Canning.
The City of Gosnells is currently working with its local youth Skate Park Advisory Group to finalise details for the 2019/20 Roll on Skate Park Series, which kicks off in October.
