Activating Mosman after dark

Mosman Council, New South Wales, has expanded its after-dark offerings during this year’s biennial Festival of Mosman celebrations to further enhance the Sydney suburb’s nightlife.

The biennial festival, staged in October, is the area’s biggest community celebration with a program of more than 60 events, activities and exhibitions.

Public spaces were activated after dark with outdoor cinemas, beach-side concerts and the OctoberFeast Night Market, where thousands of market-goers were able to enjoy gourmet food and wine and shop for artisan wares on Mosman’s Village Green.

A traditional sunset ceremony and indigenous dance performances, workshops and food stalls brought hundreds on a weeknight to
Balmoral Beach.

For the first time, an Italian feast was hosted under the stars in the centre of Mosman. Fairy lighting in the centre’s tree canopy has progressively been expanded over the past few years, giving a beautiful ambience and improving the area’s attractiveness after dark.

Mosman Art Gallery has also been opened to the public one night a week, with regular programming to attract visitors and provide further opportunities to enjoy Mosman of an evening.

Building on these night-time offerings, Council also staged a variety of new public artworks and floral displays during the Festival of Mosman to improve and activate public places around the clock.

Pop up artworks commissioned by Mosman Art Gallery and displayed in different locations on each day of the festival included larger-than-life sculptures of people and animals, ephemeral installations and performances.

Floral towers were strategically located in Mosman Square and in Mosman’s main shopping hub. The towers featured lush, colourful plant species chosen for their foliage, beauty and durability, and provided added colour and interest for the festival and the festive season to follow.

Mosman Mayor, Carolyn Corrigan, said, “Festival of Mosman showcases the best of our stunning natural environment, village atmosphere, culture and heritage and this year’s program of exciting events was enhanced by the rich public art program which made Mosman come alive.”
