Ensuring housing and community buildings and facilities provide access for all*

This year, 2020, sees the consolidation of new requirements for Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) across Australia, as well as increased impetus to address access to the built environment for everyone.

With the introduction of the National Disability Insurance Scheme, councils are required to address their responsibilities and ensure that all community members are provided with equitable, dignified access to services, buildings and facilities.

The updated National Construction Code introduced in May 2019, brought changes that require some buildings to incorporate Adult Change Facilities, to support people with high physical support needs in using toilets in public spaces.

In addition, the Housing Options Paper, released in 2018 by the Australian Building Codes Board, is forming the basis for changes relating to ‘liveability’ requirements for residential properties.

Access Institute has been engaged by both federal and state government agencies and other relevant industry bodies, Australia-wide, to develop and deliver training in these areas, to support councils to address the unique needs of their community.

Access Institute is the only registered training organisation in Australia with the skills and experience in local government to assist with access, inclusion and Universal Design training needs and projects.

Access Institute Director, (Ms.) Joe Manton, is a past local government director, with a comprehensive understanding of council operations and the unique challenges faced in addressing access and inclusion issues.

Contact Access Institute now to discuss your requirements and to book your in-house tailored training sessions at info@accessinstitute.com.au or (03) 9988 1879
