Libraries in Shire of Mundaring, Western Australia, have recently become accredited as eSmart libraries.
Designed to equip staff and library users with the skills needed for smart, safe and responsible use of digital technology, eSmart-accredited libraries have a cyber-safety framework in place.
This means library staff can help users recognise and guard against security and privacy risks online, download content in a legal and ethical way, research and reference information, and manage reputation and relationships in cyberspace.
It also supports libraries to embrace the benefits of technology while reducing children’s exposure to online risks, such as cyber bullying.
Shire of Mundaring Librarian, Ginetta Evans, said that online safety was a major issue for people in the community.
“We know from our library members that cyber safety is a big concern, and many users aren’t sure of how to stay safe online.
“By making sure we have trained library staff and online safety guidelines in place, library visitors can be confident when using the libraries.
“We are also planning online safety workshops for the public in the future, and we can help direct people to resources on being eSmart.”
The Libraries’ eSmart membership provides staff with ongoing training resources and support to maintain eSmart library status.
“We hope that by promoting awareness and guiding users to be more confident, our resident’s lives can be changed for the better and we’re helping to build positive learning communities.”
A partnership between the Alannah & Madeline Foundation and the Telstra Foundation, eSmart Libraries is one of the most significant community cyber safety initiatives ever undertaken in Australia.
