Randwick City Council has announced sections of Clovelly Beach and Chifley Sports Reserve car parks will be temporarily turned into pop-up pedal parks.
The pop-ups will provide a safe and accessible space for local families to use for outdoor recreation such as bike riding, scooter riding and ball games.
Mayor, Danny Said, said, “During the COVID-19 pandemic when beaches and beachside car parks were closed, local families embraced many of our closed car parks turning them into temporary bike tracks and outdoor recreation spaces.
“Since beachside car parks reopened on 13 May 2020, we’ve had requests from residents including the Clovelly Precinct Committee and a petition asking Council to consider providing safe community access to car parks throughout winter.
“It was really great to see how the community re-imagined the use of this public space during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“They turned disused asphalt into a place of healthy community interaction, fun and learning.
“Kids learnt to ride a bike for the first time and practised tricks on scooters, while others played handball and basketball.
“With many of our beachside car parks lightly used over winter, this is an opportunity to trial pop up winter pedal parks to provide more open space for local families to use for recreation and physical activity.”
