Snowy Monaro Regional Council, New South Wales, Community Connections Groups celebrated the holiday season with a final ‘surprising’ community project to bring a tough year to its close.
Taking their inspiration from Amelia Earhart, who said, ‘A single act of kindness throws out roots in all directions, and the roots spring up and make new trees’, Community Connections created small gifts to leave in random locations across the region, to be found by members of the community.
Building on the ripple effect of random acts of kindness, the project’s aim was to uplift not only the giver and recipient but also anyone who witnesses or heard about it.
‘Random acts…’ followed on from ‘Yarn Bomb’ which brightened people’s day during the winter months, by adding warmth and whimsy to trees across the region.
‘Yarn Bomb’ is street art that employs colourful displays of knitted or crocheted yarn to adorn an object in the public environment.
The yarn bomb installations demonstrated Community Connections exploration of different ways of staying connected and encouraged the use of art as a way to relax and de-stress.
With the continued easing of COVID-19 restrictions, Snowy Monaro Community Connections Groups have resumed normal activities with exciting plans for keeping the community engaged in 2021.
