Paving a new path

New apprentice and trainee roles at City of Gosnells, Western Australia, are boosting employment opportunities for young people as part of the City’s ongoing response to COVID-19.

Local residents Remy Raven (21) and Jordan Mills (18) are the first to gain apprenticeships with the City’s Environmental Services team, with both set to study a Certificate III in Parks and Gardens at South Metropolitan TAFE.

Mayor David Goode, who met the newly inducted apprentices this week, said it was vital that young people had secure employment pathways, particularly with the economic challenges brought about by the pandemic.

“Providing an apprenticeship-traineeship program is a very tangible and responsible way for the City to contribute to our community’s economic recovery.

“Remy and Jordan have the attitude and desire to develop their skills and I’m sure they’ll make a great addition to our parks team.”

For Remy, the apprenticeship was a natural step given her background working with the family gardening business while Jordan, who had previously worked casually in landscaping, is happy to have stable employment and formal training.

The City is currently advertising for an apprentice painter and will soon appoint a trainee in the community services area.

Mayor Goode said the City had worked closely with training providers and local high schools to ensure young residents were aware of the new employment program.
