Ready to go after dark at the library

Glenelg Shire Council, Victoria, is increasing the evening entertainment options with a series of late-night events and activities at the Portland Library.

As part of the Libraries After Dark program funding, the Portland Library will extend its opening hours every Thursday evening to help promote the facility as a community lounge and as an alternative to a gambling venue.

Acting Information and Library Services Manager, Tanya Flockhart said for the next two years the facility will open until 10pm on Thursday, with a schedule of programs to attract new and existing audiences.

“We’re thrilled to finally unveil our Libraries After Dark program after what has been a challenging year for public libraries.

“It’s fantastic to be able to welcome back members and visitors through the doors, and what better way to do so than with a range of COVID safe events.

“Implementing the Libraries After Dark program will be staff members Casey Marlow and Tracy Jensen.

“Casey will be a familiar face to many who frequent the Library through her Library Children’s and Youth Officer role, and we are pleased to welcome Tracy to our Glenelg Libraries team.

To kick things off in the first week of the program, the Library will host a screening of the award-winning movie Lion starring Nicole Kidman and Dev Patel.

“In the coming weeks, we will offer games nights, coffee chats and a whole range of informal and inclusive programs, providing a safe and welcoming environment for all.”

The Libraries After Dark program is an initiative of the Moreland City Council and supports libraries across Victoria through funds provided by the Victorian Responsible Gambling Foundation.

The Glenelg Shire was successful in its application due to the high gambling losses recorded and the proximity of the Library to the Shire’s four gaming venues.
