Demystifying carbon sinks

A new booklet for Local Government about growing trees to reduce greenhouse gases, and a set of field procedures for carbon accounting is now available. The booklet is one of two publications designed to help those involved in growing or investing in trees as carbon sinks.

The Australian Greenhouse Office has published the two booklets targeting the agriculture and Local Government sectors. They outline issues to consider in planning greenhouse sinks.

The booklets contains a ‘ready reckoner’. This provides people with estimates of carbon sequestration in the early stages of planning a sinks project.

Rebecca Ford from the Greenhouse and Land Management Team at the Australian Greenhouse Office said that there has been a high demand for a document that provides practical advice to landholders about carbon sinks.

“The best thing about this system is that it can be picked up by a whole range of different people,” she said. “It can be used by Australian Greenhouse Office program participants, catchment management organisations, forestry companies and anyone else wanting to get involved in carbon business.

The field manual and two booklets are the first of a series of Bush for Greenhouse products, which will assist private individuals to establish or invest in carbon sinks,” The Local Government sector has been calling for assistance in integrating trees into their greenhouse responses.

The booklets are available from the Australian Greenhouse at website at www.greenhouse.gov.au and in hard copy.Copies of the Local Government booklet will shortly be sent to all local Councils. The field procedures manual is available from the Australian Greenhouse Office website in electronic format, or waterproof hard copy format for use in the field.
