$6 million Centre

The Cardinia community is eagerly awaiting the opening, expected early 2002, of a state of the art cultural facility in Pakenham. The Cardinia Cultural Centre, located in the Delfin ‘Lakeside at Pakenham’ estate on the Princes Highway is a landmark project that will cater for a variety of cultural and artistic needs.

The energy efficient, multifunctional building will house a 350 seat theatre, a 400 seat function centre, and arts retail centre, a community arts area, an arts learning area with artists workshops as well as a café and restaurant overlooking the lake.

The $6 million centre, funded by Cardinia Shire Council and the State Government’s Community Support Fund, has been designed by Architects, Prior and Cheney, to complement similar developments in neighbouring regions. The theatre has been design to meet the Arts Council B2 standards so it will be included in their regional programs.

“This is the most significant project Councils has made a decision on in four and a half years,” said Mayor Graeme Legge. “It is the largest single project ever embarked on in Cardinia.”
