Landholders in Queensland’s Crow’s Nest Shire have the opportunity to apply for funding of natural resource management projects on their property, through the Shire’s Natural Resource Management (NRM) Small Grants. The aim of the grants is to assist landholders in achieving positive natural resource management outcomes for their land and the Shire in general.
The grants are supported by funding assistance from the Bushcare Program of the Federal Government’s Natural Heritage Trust. With round two of the Shire’s Grants under way, approximately $45,000 has been allocated.
Ravensbourne couple, Neville and Jill Zell used their grant for the restoration of remnant wet sclerophyll forest on their property. Their project focused on strategic control of lantana and privet throughout the forest and is part of a wider management effort. The Zells have already fenced off the remnant area and plan to regenerate areas of disturbance with local species.
A project undertaken by the Morice family in Haden has involved establishing a wildlife corridor on their property. This will serve as a habitat for wildlife in the area, as well as a windbreak providing protection for cattle on their property.
There are four project types for which grants are available. They are: fencing off areas of significant remnant vegetation and riparian areas; tree planting to rehabilitate degraded significant remnant vegetation and corridors; native pasture rehabilitation; and soil conservation works.
