‘PoARTry in Motion’ is giving Rockhampton residents the opportunity to express themselves in a State wide travelling poetry and artwork exhibition. An indigenous theme has been used to explore identity, personal history, the natural landscape and social issues.
The launch of the exhibition on 11 July 2002 was a fitting tribute to mark local NAIDOC week celebrations. The exhibition ran until 9 August 2002.
Representatives from the State Library of Queensland, art groups, indigenous groups and local residents attended the opening. Various Queensland poets including Vicki Bennet, Jeanette Brown and Wilfred Reeves will participate in the exhibition as well as others just beginning to express themselves through poetry.
Cooloola Shire Library Service’s Indigenous Resource Unit initiated and developed the exhibition, funded by a State Library of Queensland Innovation Grant.
“The exhibition’s title, ‘PoARTry in Motion’, is indicative of poetry as a form of artistic expression, while ‘in Motion’ refers to the evolving nature of the exhibition, which is travelling throughout Queensland,” said Rockhampton’s Community Services Committee Chair, Councillor Dell Bunt.
Rockhampton was one of over 30 libraries throughout Queensland to present ‘PoARTry in Motion’.
“We are fortunate to be part of this special exhibition that showcases some of Queensland’s talented authors,” Councillor Bunt said.
