The Australian Sports Commission (ASC) recently launched 1800 Reverse Street Active, a new and exciting initiative focusing on the booming street sports scene. The rise in popularity of street sports among children and teenagers has seen sports like skateboarding, inline skating and freestyle BMX require increased support and access to facilities from Local Government.
Local Councils around the country have been quick to identify the need to support these sports. Many have constructed purpose built facilities, like skate parks and bowls, to cater to their unique requirements.
The ongoing support of Local Government is fundamental to the success and long term viability of the 1800 Reverse Street Active initiative. The ASC is encouraging Councils to become active participants in the initiative by signing up as 1800 Reverse Street Active Community Partners. These partnerships enable Councils and community groups to play a leading role in the development of street sports in the future.
Primarily targeted at boys and girls six to 14 years of age, the ASC’s goals for 1800 Reverse Street Active are high levels of appeal to young people, mass participation, the creation of active club membership pathways, national delivery in metropolitan, regional and rural areas and high levels of corporate support.
The ASC would like to know about any programs, events or clinics that your Council or community might already be undertaking in relation to street sports.
