Campaspe’s user friendly

The Shire of Campaspe’s Integrated Management System (IMS) centralises quality, safety and environmental information in a single, user friendly tool for Council staff. The system replaces several unrelated programs to ensure leading management practices and quality services across all Council activities. Assembled through the Shire’s intranet, the IMS Manual ensures consistent information is disseminated to staff, including policy statements, corporate plans, corrective and preventative actions, work instructions, forms and registers.

A comprehensive search engine allows information specific to particular departments or relevant to all staff to be available in an easy to navigate format. IMS is an evaluation tool for Council to set targets, monitor improvements and measure its performance against Australian standards and relevant legislative requirements.

An IMS Committee, comprising staff from all levels, has been integral to the success of the IMS Manual. Extensive staff consultation by the Committee has led to a positive feeling of ownership. The IMS Manual has enabled Occupational Health and Safety staff to record all incidents in a single register for reporting and liability purposes.

A similar format could be used by other Local Government organisations to meet OH&S and public risk requirements and to demonstrate compliance with Australian standards.
