For the first time in the Award’s history, a member of Local Government has taken out the New South Wales Award for Public Sector Accountant of the Year.
Geoff Banting, Director Community and Corporate Services, at the City of Hawkesbury, said the Award was a feather in the cap for Local Government.
The Award is open to members of the Australian Society of CPA(ASCPA) who have made a significant individual contribution to Public Sector Accounting by improving the outcomes of the organisation for which they work.
Geoff was nominated not only for his efficient administration of Hawkesbury’s financial operations and his sound counsel to elected members and staff, but for his contribution to Local Government and Public Sector Accounting across the State.
As Chairperson of the Local Government Finance Professionals and through other professional bodies, Geoff has been a key figure in creating networks for Local Government finance specialists.
This ensured they were encouraged to have access to all the information they needed as they participated in a period of dramatic and demanding change in the role Local Government played in the broad economy.
Geoff Banting also organised the inaugural Finance Professionals State Conference and authored papers on issues, including External Financial Reporting and Selecting Financial Information Systems.
Among his many achievements has been the creation of a strong link between Local Government finance practitioners and the ASCPA, linking Local Government into the wider aspects of their work.
These include areas such as environmental accounting, training and development and regional group support.
