A simple plan to refurbish the Town Hall has led to a complete facelift for Whitemark, ‘capital’ of Flinders Island in Bass Strait.
Having met to discuss the Town Hall development, interested residents recognised there was an opportunity to redevelop the town itself.
The burgeoning tourist industry on the Island led the assembled group to seek ways of improving the Whitemark townscape by developing small innovative community projects.
A team, comprising a Cultural Planner, Urban Design Artist and Regional Cultural Officer, provided planning expertise for the community.
The process included community consultation, presentation of concepts, and an implementation phase. It is based on three themes, social issues, built environment and natural environment.
Having developed proposals for the town ‘makeover’ the design group set up a public display to encourage participation and feedback on the various proposals from the Flinders community .
The new look Whitemark will feature new tree plantings, outdoor artworks, better signage and a design which signals a sense of ‘arrival’ to the town.
The work has been divided into small community based projects. This has enabled Flinder’s strong community of artists to bring their talents to bear on creating the new image. Work will take place ovr the next two years.
