Western Australian communities have the opportunity to record their Australia Day 2000 celebrations in a documentary video. It will be screened at the first Western Australian Municipal Association Conference for the new millennium.
This initiative was launched at the Association’s 1999 Conference held in August. The Australia Day Council provided all Western Australian Councils with a ten minute cassette and invited them to record their Australia Day 2000 events.
Executive Director of the Australia Day Council (Western Australia), Jim Baker, said that this Project was received enthusiastically by delegates. “Many felt ten minutes would not be long enough,” he said.
“The Year 2000 provides a benchmark which does not simply beckon us. “It almost demands we go out of our way to celebrate the positive aspects of our Australia and record for posterity this special day.”
The ten minute tapes will be professionally edited and compiled to make a film of celebrations and activities throughout Western Australia on that day. The documentary will also provide an archive of the diverse communities across the vast State at the turn of the millennium.
The Australia Day Council also suggested that many Councils might take the opportunity to record their presentation of Citizenship Awards or publicise the names of award recipients and special local activities.
