Reserve upgrade makes a healthier Kogarah

One of the more popular activities of Local Government is the provision of community facilities which allow people ready access to a variety of leisure opportunities. Apart from providing fun, recreation facilities are also an investment in a healthier community.

At Kogarah in NSW, the Stuart Street Reserve upgrade has been acknowledged for its contribution to healthy recreation, taking out the Healthy Hearts Award in the NSW Heart Foundation’s Local Government Awards. Mayor James Jordan said the Reserve is one of the larger projects undertaken by Council in recent years.

It has had the effect of transforming an area of low amenity into a popular meeting place and recreational facility for all residents. The Reserve now contains playground equipment, a combined basketball and netball court, a cycle track, ball wall, soccer practice goal, a cricket practice pitch and an outdoor fitness gym.

“Community consultation was an important factor in deciding what facilities to provide and what issues we needed to address,” James Jordan said. “A community survey and exhibition was held to ascertain the needs of local people and we were thrilled with the large number of residents who attended our open day.

“The winning combination of good design and community consultation led to an award of which we are very proud.”
