With 1999 designated as the International Year of Older Persons, the Office of Seniors Interests in Western Australia is calling on Councils to let them know about events they are planning to celebrate this.
The United Nations has adopted the theme ‘Towards a Society for all Ages’ for the year, to challenge the widespread perception that older persons have little to contribute and are a drain on society. Populations are ageing world wide. In Western Australia, it is estimated that within 20 years over a quarter of the population will be aged over 60. Already 14 percent are 60 or over.
The Office of Seniors Interests is concerned that Local Government, along with other policy making bodies, should begin now to plan for the increase in demand for services that this will create. It is concerned that the year does not simply attract lip service with resources concentrated just on events such as celebration dinners.
The Office points out that seniors have real concerns about the environment they live in, their need for security, adequate facilities and the opportunity to fully participate in life. Isolation, they say, is a real concern and something which can be overcome.
United Nations’ principles for the year include the following.
- Recognition of the value of older persons.
- Raised awareness of older persons needs.
- Planning for a future in which many more people are aged over 60.
