In South Australia, seven City Councils and five District Councils currently have their own Internet sites. A leading Council in this area is the District Council of East Torrens. Located in the Adelaide hills with a population of 7,000, East Torrens has been at the forefront in assisting other Councils to get onto the web. Council also provides free Internet access to all local businesses including all Internet services. A number have already taken up this offer.
“We want our businesses to have the greatest advantages we can provide by assisting them to move into the EDI and electronic way of doing business,” said Eric March, Chief Executive Officer.
The District Council of Mount Remarkable, situated 265 kilometres north of Adelaide and with a population of 3,000, has taken up East Torrens offer of support to establish a web site.
“Six months down the track, we are quite pleased with the number of ‘hits’ we have received to our webpage,” said Peter Moore, District Clerk at Mount Remarkable. “The other major advantage is the email facility.”
He said that Council decided to work with East Torrens as it was the only South Australian Local Government authority operating as a server provider and, for very competitive rates, was able to assist with the development of a webpage. A range of information, including details on Councillors, Council staff, meeting dates and general information about the area, is presented on Mount Remarkable’s web site.
East Torrens’ webpage (www.camtech.com.au/easttorrens) has links to other South Australian Councils Online, various Local Government peak bodies, plus a direct link to Wellington City Council in New Zealand and Birmingham in the UK.
