Illawarra on the Internet

The Illawarra Region of Councils, in conjunction with the Illawarra Office of Department of State and Regional Development, has established a regional presence on the Internet.

Located at www.peg.apc.org/~iroc/, it has over 90 World Wide Web pages promoting the Illawarra and providing a profile of the region, which includes the Councils of Kiama, Shellharbour, Shoalhaven, Wingecarribee and Wollongong.

Economic development is promoted through an economic profile, links to sites such as the Illawarra Regional Information Service, and regional contacts for industry and commercial development enquiries and information.

The region’s tourism attractions are promoted through Regional Tourist Drives. Web browsers can tour any of 15 regional drives, stopping off to look at attractions, activities, accommodation and places to eat along the way.

The Illawarra Community Events Calendar is an innovative online events registration for which IROC acts as mediator. This allows web users within the region and visitors to access information about what is happening and promote planned events.

A further exciting facility being trialed is the ‘Illawarra Postcard’. Already proving popular, users can select and send a postcard from the Illawarra online, choosing from representative photographs of each of the five Local Government areas.

“The regional presence is a first and it is being looked at enviously by other regions of Australia as it is sufficiently interesting to tempt browsers from around the world,” said Lesley Scarlett, IROC Executive Officer. It was designed by Global Presence, a locally based firm of Web publishers and consultants.

“The five Councils are excited to have participated in this venture, and are busy establishing their own sites aimed primarily at providing services and information to their own communities within the Illawarra,” Lesley Scarlett concluded.
