Outback experience

Boulia Shire in Central Far West Queensland covers some 63,000 square kilometres. Most of its 600 residents are involved in wool and beef production. Boulia township, the administrative centre of the Shire, has a population of 300 people with Council being a major employer.

Council is not content to rely purely on its traditional industries. It is taking an active role in promoting the region’s unique history and lifestyle to tourists wanting to experience outback Australia first hand.

A promotional campaign draws potential visitors to Burke and Wills Camp 33 on the Wills River, peaceful fishing spots on the Georgina River as well as abundant bird life and unique vegetation found in the district.

Boulia Stonehouse, built last century, is now a museum paying tribute to the pioneering lifestyles of early European settlers and indigenous people of the area.

The unsolved mystery of the Min Min light which is embodied in local native legend is highlighted in tourist promotions. Council has erected viewing platforms to try and understand the phenomenon.

The Min Min light has been recorded by travellers and locals for over 100 years. It appears as a round glowing ball, about head height, near the site of the old Min Hotel. It has been witnessed by many people, including those sober enough to be taken seriously.

Scientists have been trying to find a rational explanation for the light for some time but to no avail. Council is looking at producing a bigger version of the light show for the many curious visitors the story attracts to the area.

In November, visiting Boulia will be even easier when the Queensland Minister for Transport opens the final sealed section of the Winton to Boulia Road providing one of the most stunning outback vistas anywhere in Australia.

A further innovative attraction will see the first fully fledged camel races in Australia staged at Boulia next year. Including a full three kilometre race, offering $20,000 in prize money, the Races are sure to draw a large crowd. With more people travelling off the beaten track for a more interesting holiday experience, Boulia is ready to provide exactly what they are after.
