The Mayor of the City of Greater Bendigo has urged community members from diverse backgrounds to consider running for Council.
Mayor Rod Fyffe said the Greater Bendigo community is made up of people of different abilities and backgrounds, such as religion, ethnicity, age and culture, and these groups deserve to be represented on Council.
“We want anyone who is interested in local government and passionate about their community to think about standing as a candidate,” said Mayor Fyffe.
“It would be a terrible shame if people who had a disability, for example, felt that they would not be supported to
be a Councillor.
“Greater Bendigo is a vibrant and dynamic community, which is made up of people from many different backgrounds. Our Council should reflect that diversity.”
Public information sessions about local government have been offered to interested community members, and a pre-election training session is to be hosted by the Victorian Local Governance Association in July.
“There is still plenty of opportunity to think about running for Council,” said Mayor Fyfe.
“These sessions are a great way to hear from people with Council experience and to decide if you would like to stand as a candidate.”
The City’s Councillor Support Policy provides all councillors with equal opportunity to fulfil their responsibilities. This includes: providing reasonable adjustments for people with a disability; child-care costs; training and further education; and transport.
Victorian Local Government elections are to be held in October.
