South East Queensland mayors vie for 2028 Olympics

A pre-feasibility report released by the Mayors of South Queensland (SEQ) yesterday has shown the region could be a viable contender for the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The Olympic Pre-feasibility Analysis Report found that there are sufficient economic, social and cultural benefits for the area that warrant further investigation. The next step is to undertake a People Mass Movement study, a review of sporting and performing arts venues, and a full Olympic feasibility study.

The report also determined the region needs to better equip itself for future population growth, regardless of an Olympic bid.

Council of Mayors (SEQ) Chair and Brisbane Lord Mayor, Graham Quirk, said the Mayors were enthusiastic about the outcomes of the report.

“How we deal with the challenges of accommodating our increasing population, delivering the right infrastructure, improving our standard of living and growing our economy in a competitive global market will shape the future of SEQ in the decades to come,” said Lord Mayor Quirk.

“The Report shows that an SEQ Olympics could be a significant opportunity for the region, but also exposed the need for all tiers of government to work together to create a roadmap for SEQ’s economic, social and cultural growth over the next 30 to 50 years.”

The Pre-feasibility Analysis Report was conducted over the last 12 months.

“The SEQ Mayors support the conclusions of the Pre-feasibility Analysis Report and the need for further exploration of an SEQ 2028 Olympic Games. However, we will continue to approach this opportunity with caution and careful consideration,” said the Lord Mayor.

“Any future Olympic work will only proceed if we are absolutely confident it will deliver value and benefits for our residents. Ultimately, an Olympic bid will only proceed if it makes the SEQ community better and stronger than it would be without a bid.”
