Residents design their own homes

The City of Fremantle will trial a European model for developing innovative urban communities, which invites residents to design their own homes.

The European inspired Baugruppen housing model is popular in large, international cities such as Berlin and functions by asking future owner-occupiers to work together to design a group of dwellings based on their collective needs.

This results in lower housing development costs for owners, unique design concepts and a stronger sense of community.

Fremantle Councillor Rachel Pemberton said the innovative, community-driven model is the perfect fit for Fremantle and its diverse housing needs.

“This cooperative housing project allows people to have an input into the design of not only their own living spaces but also the design of the whole building, including communal areas.

“It’s above and beyond what can currently be achieved in a traditional apartment development and has proven to provide great benefits to everyone involved.

“This type of resident-led development has delivered high quality developments that are often more sustainable and affordable throughout Germany; we hope it can deliver similar outcomes for people here in Perth, starting in Fremantle.”

The City is calling for expressions of interest for people to be part of this initiative at a 1,477 sqm site in Fremantle’s iconic east end.

“The location at Fremantle’s east end is an ideal location for this project as an up-and-coming precinct and key gateway into our city,” said Cr Pemberton.

As part of the City’s commitment to supporting creative and innovative housing solutions, the proposal will be required to meet best practice standards in environmentally sustainable and accessible building design.
