WA Local Government Association President Mayor Troy Pickard has announced that Rodney Thornton has joined WALGA’s RoadWise Program as Road Safety Advisor in the Wheabelt South Region.
This appointment will provide stronger support for road safety in the Wheatbelt South region.
Mr Thornton will work with Local Governments, RoadWise Committees and communities across 19 shires from Beverley to Narrembeen and West Arthur to Lake Grace, engaging the community to work together to reduce road deaths and serious injuries.
Sixty-seven people were killed or seriously injured in the region last year, with more than half of these being the result of singe vehicle crashes.
Mayor Pickard said that road safety is a shared responsibility.
“[Mr Thornton] will provide a new enthusiasm and a different view on how the communities and groups of like-minded people can achieve improved outcomes,” said Mayor Pickard.
“The RoadWise Committees in the region contribute a great deal to the focus of road safety and they will benefit from Rodney’s local knowledge and strong community development experience in the region.”
Mr Thornton is well known in the Wheatbelt region and will operate from an office in Bruce Rock, where he lives with his wife Merredith and children.
The RoadWise Program engages with and provides input to the community road safety network that extends across the whole of Western Australia.
