Fraser Coast Regional Council in Queensland has reported significant success in its animal adoption program.
Last year 375 dogs and cats were adopted through the Hervey Bay Adoption Centre, that’s more than one animal a day finding a loving home.
Thanks to the dedicated staff and volunteers, there has been a massive decrease in the number of dogs and cats being euthanized. Animals are only euthanised at the centre if they are too sick or aggressive to be adopted.
Deputy Mayor George Seymour said that the figures were very heartening.
“We have a great team of volunteers and staff who work with these stray or surrendered animals to make sure they are socialised and ready to be adopted and given a second chance at finding a loving home.
“We all can take practical steps in our lives to improve animal welfare in our community, such as adopting an animal rather than supporting unscrupulous puppy farms.”
All cats and dogs that leave the centre are vet checked, wormed, vaccinated, micro-chipped, desexed (or have a desexing voucher) and are registered with council for the current financial year.
“Responsible pet guardianship is important and desexing your pet means they are less likely to roam and create unwanted litters which end up in adoption centres” Cr Seymour said.
“Micro-chipping your pet means it can be returned to you if it becomes lost.”
